Dr. Anthony Ruberto is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and an Affiliate with the Center of Population Sciences for Health Empowerment at Florida State University.
Dr. Ruberto earned his Ph.D. under the mentorship of Dr. Michèle Teboul at the Institute of Biology Valrose, Université Côte d’Azur, in Nice, France. His doctoral research examined the relationship between circadian rhythms and metabolic dysfunction in the liver.
For his postdoctoral training, Dr. Ruberto joined the laboratory of Dr. Ivo Mueller in the Department of Insect Vectors and Parasites at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, France, where he investigated the biology of malaria-causing parasites within the mosquito. This work later brought him to the Institut Pasteur du Cambodge in Cambodia, a malaria-endemic country, where he applied his expertise in cellular and molecular biology to investigate the parasite forms within the human, including dormant liver-stage forms that can persist and later activate to cause relapsing malaria.
Dr. Ruberto subsequently joined the Center for Tropical and Emerging Global Diseases at the University of Georgia, where he trained under the direction of Dr. Dennis Kyle in antiparasitic drug discovery and mechanisms of drug resistance. During this period, his research encompassed several medically important pathogens, including Plasmodium species, Naegleria fowleri, Trypanosoma cruzi, and Toxoplasma gondii. In 2024, he received an NIH National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award to advance his research program in infectious-disease drug discovery and resistance.
